'Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets': What Do Critics Think?

International Business Times

Reviews for the Luc Besson-directed sci-fi flick "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" filed in Tuesday, with most critics describing the film as a beautiful and expensive disaster. Adapted from the French comic "Valerian et Laureline," Dane Dehaan and Cara Delevinge star in the STX-EuraCorp production slated to premiere July 21. "Valerian" has earned a range of polarized reactions from "simply childish" to "mind-meltingly beautiful and strange" from top critics, making it hard to pin down as a viable contender for the summer box office. The sci-fi project currently holds 74 percent on Rotten Tomatoes' aggregator scale. The Hollywood Reporter claimed that "Valerian" is a potential Razzie contender, saying: "The Razzies don't need to wait until the end of the year to anoint a winner for 2017. The Golden Turkey Awards should be republished with a new cover."

Rihanna Shares Sneak Peek At Her Role In Luc Besson's 'Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets'

International Business Times

Rihanna portrays the role of Bubble in Luc Besson's upcoming sci-fi film "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets." And to give fans a better look at her unique character, the singer recently shared a behind-the-scenes teaser for the movie on Instagram. The sneak peek reveals that Bubble is a burlesque dancer who can change her physical appearance at will. While she has the ability to shape-shift into human form, her real figure is actually an amorphous blue blob. Interestingly, Rihanna is seen in a motion capture suit in the preview clip, so it means that the "Work" hitmaker was also the one bringing her character to life even when she's not in human form.

'Edge of Seventeen,' Moonlight' and more critics' picks, Nov. 25-Dec. 1

Los Angeles Times

Arrival Amy Adams stars in this elegant, involving science fiction drama that is simultaneously old and new, revisiting many alien invasion conventions but with unexpected intelligence, visual style and heart. Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened This superb documentary directed by Lonny Price covers a rich swath of emotional and creative ground as it tracks the unexpected failure of theater gods Stephen Sondheim and Hal Prince's hugely anticipated 1981 Broadway collaboration "Merrily We Roll Along." The Eagle Huntress A portrait of a 13-year-old Kazakh girl from Mongolia who defies eons of tradition by learning to hunt with fierce golden eagles is a documentary so satisfying it makes you feel good about feeling good. The Edge of Seventeen Hailee Steinfeld gives a superb performance as a high-school misfit in Kelly Fremon Craig's disarmingly smart teen dramedy, the rare coming-of-age picture that feels less like a retread than a renewal. Elle Paul Verhoeven's brilliantly booby-trapped new thriller starring Isabelle Huppert is a gripping whodunit, a tour de force of psychological suspense and a wickedly droll comedy of manners.

'Arrival,' 'Loving' and more critics' picks, Nov. 11-17

Los Angeles Times

Arrival Amy Adams stars in this elegant, involving science fiction drama that is simultaneously old and new, revisiting many alien invasion conventions but with unexpected intelligence, visual style and heart. Certain Women Laura Dern, Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart and a revelatory Lily Gladstone star in writer-director Kelly Reichardt's beautifully understated triptych about four women making their way through life in small-town Montana. The Eagle Huntress A portrait of a 13-year-old Kazakh girl from Mongolia who defies eons of tradition by learning to hunt with fierce golden eagles is a documentary so satisfying it makes you feel good about feeling good. The Handmaiden The most absorbing feature in years from the South Korean director Park Chan-wook ("Oldboy") is a teasingly witty and elegant puzzle-box of a thriller about two women (played by Kim Tae-ri and Kim Min-hee) pursuing their destinies in 1930s Japanese-occupied Korea. Kubo and the Two Strings In this 3-D wonderment steeped in ancient Japanese folklore and brought to life by the stop-motion innovators at Laika Entertainment, magic is both an eye-popping phenomenon and an everyday reality.

'Arrival' is deeply human, expertly realized science fiction

Los Angeles Times

Movies that begin with confounding aliens on the loose have been around for awhile (at least since 1951's "Man From Planet X" and "The Day the Earth Stood Still") and they invariably share a family resemblance even if the space visitors themselves never look the same way twice. Where do these beings come from, baffled scientists and frightened government officials inevitably want to know. Are they friendly or hostile, what do they want from us and what are they doing here in the first place? One of the most satisfying things about Denis Villeneuve's elegant, involving "Arrival" is that it is simultaneously old and new, revisiting many of these alien-invasion conventions but with unexpected intelligence, visual style and heart. Working from a smart and effective script by Eric Heisserer adapted from a cerebral short story by science-fiction luminary Ted Chiang, the French-Canadian director and his team have found ways to make these way-out-of-the-ordinary events seem plausible and convincing.

Luc Besson Working on Artificial Intelligence Series

#artificialintelligence

Lucy gave Luc Besson's career a little bit of a boost. It's not like the producer of countless action movies needed the help, but Lucy was the director's biggest hit in years, and it most likely afforded him the opportunity to make Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The pricey sci-fi film is currently shooting, but once that picture wraps, Besson will be turn his attention to Artificial Intelligence, an original show from TNT and EuroCorp TV USA. EuroCorp TV USA has sold Artificial Intelligence to TNT. Besson will co-write, co-create, and executive produce the series with Bill Wheeler, who worked on the upcoming Ghost in the Shell remake.
